三個月

抱著 one day at a time(「過一天算一天」XD)的心情照顧寶寶,不知不覺的Lynn已經滿三個月。

People got to learn to sleep on their own.

http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Tomato-Curry-Lentil-Stew/Detail.aspx

No-Knead Bread

Success!

Didn't think I'll have time to mess with the oven and make bread after having Lynn... but we saw on TV last night this "no-knead" bread recipe, I googled it right away. Here's the recipe from NYT. (We don't have a dutch oven and used clay pot instead. Worked beautifully.)

The result: crispy on the outside while moist, fluffy and chewy on the inside. We used high-gluten flour 'cause we need to use up the big bag we bought earlier, but bread flour or even all-purpose flour will work just fine, according to the recipe.

-- 07/22 update --

CHTHONIC (pronounced “Thon-ick”) HAS BEEN CALLED THE “BLACK SABBATH OF ASIA,” AND WILL BE THE FIRST ASIAN BAND TO PLAY OZZFEST. THE MORE I LEARNED ABOUT THIS DARK, MYSTERIOUS METAL BAND, THE MORE I WANTED TO INTERVIEW THE LEFT FACE OF MARADOU, A.K.A. FREDDY LIM. I CALLED HIM ON HIS CELL AND ROUSED HIM OUT OF BED THE MORNING AFTER HIS FIRST GIG OF THE SUMMER TOUR. I SPOKE WITH HIM ABOUT OZZFEST, THE TAIWANESE METAL SCENE AND HIS PROUD HERITAGE.

MikeL: So, last night was the first show of your international tour called UNlimited?

Freddy: Yeah, I am really tired. It was at The Wall in Taipei, Taiwan. The show was packed. There were about seven hundred people. We had a very successful show yesterday we were very happy with it. We have done a lot of exercise and practice to get ready for this whole tour because it’s our first with more than ten shows.

MikeL: You’ve played in America before… where did you play?

Freddy: Metal Meltdown and Milwaukee Metal Fest.

MikeL: How did you like the American audience?

Freddy: I like them very much. They are very different than the Asian type of fan because they have a more direct reaction. When you play fast they will bang their heads, start a mosh pit, fight with each other, and shout real loud. In Asia the fans stare at you and try to learn your skills and try to learn the technique of the guitarist. So it’s quite different. In places like Taiwan, Japan, or Hong Kong the fans want to sit and watch the show, without all the interruptions. In the US, I like all the chaos in the audience. They like to fight with each other.

MikeL: Why did you name the tour UNlimited?

Freddy: In the beginning we were just supposed to play Ozzfest. Then we teamed up to tour with Nile and play more shows with them in between Ozzfest. We decide to open our schedule cause more and more cities wanted us to play, including places in Canada. So we felt it was like unlimited. We will continue to tour North America until the meeting of the United Nations starts this year. We feel it’s a good opportunity to let all the fans understand our ideas and beliefs. As an independent country, it is not fair to not let Taiwan be a member of the United Nations or part of any other National Organizations. So I feel it is a good opportunity to teach our fans about our ideas. All our songs are about Taiwan and all the concepts are about Taiwan. I don’t want to say it’s a great country, but it’s just a country like your country. It’s a normal country, we pay taxes to the government, we hate the government, we have televisions, we have the army, we have policeman, and if you want to come to Taiwan you have to apply for a visa directly from our government, just like if I want to come the US, I have to apply for a visa from your government. So it’s quite a normal country, just like the US, Canada, or Australia, so it’s not fair. We will be able to share our songs to lots of fans this time, and we want to let the fans know that it’s about much more than the music. This country is what supports us and gives us the concepts to write these songs. I don’t mean money; this country inspires us to write more stuff. And I fell it’s good cuz I can always right more and more stuff… there is no limitation for me. I have lots of inspiration from this country; legends, and ghost stories.

MikeL: The name ChthoniC is a Greek word right?

Freddy: Yes, in the beginning when we wanted to find a name for ourselves, we looked in the mythology dictionary and found Chthonic and thought it was cool. But a few months later, when we started writing songs about Taiwan we thought we should find something more meaningful and something that related more to Taiwan. But our fans like Chthonic and we got used to this name so we didn’t want to change it. It means the gods form the underworld.

MikeL: One of your tales is the Seediq Bale and it’s a Taiwanese tribe. Could you tell me about the story?

Freddy: The Seediq tribe is a kind of warrior tribe where all the men had to be trained as a warrior. In the 1930’s when Taiwan was occupied by Japan, the colonial government saw the tribe as a threat, so they brought the leader of the tribe to Tokyo and showed them modern culture and modern weapons. They showed them tanks, airplanes, and guns to try to show them and ask them not to fight against them. The Seediq tribes have tattoos on their faces to prove that they are fighting people. The Japanese government stopped them from doing that. A couple years later, the leader found out all the young people still wanted to fight with the Japanese government, and the leader told them they needed to stop fighting cuz there was no chance they could win. The main reason the leader didn’t want to fight with government was because he wanted his tribe to survive and at that moment he decided, no more tattoos, no more fighting tribe. The tribe occupied many mountains, but after the modern weapons they started to get wiped out. The women and children of the Seediq tribe decided on suicide because they wanted to let their husbands and fathers fight carelessly so that they wouldn’t have to worry about leaving their family behind. To me that is the most touching part of the story because many women and children killed themselves so that their warriors could fight. The Seediq tribe believes that the whole tribe belongs to one spirit. So eventually they would all end up together again, which helped the warriors to get over the deaths of their women and children. They have a tradition that when they are 18 years old they have to cut the head off of their enemy and then drink wine out of the neck. They believe that the enemy spirit is part of your spirit now, and that the enemy is not dead, that he will actually live in your body. I think the most important part of this history is that people need to fight for what they believe in. the Seediq people fought for their tattoos. Of course they had lots of problems between them and the colonial government, but they key point is they wanted to keep their identity. So for Taiwanese young people and the modern youth, I think it is very important to think about what it is that’s worth it to you to fight for. You can’t waste your life doing something you don’t want to do.

MikeL: Wow! So, looking ahead, what are you looking forward to most about playing the Ozzfest?

Freddy: I was a die hard fan of Ozzy Osbourne and Crazy Train was the anthem of Taiwanese young people who wanted to have a band; everybody had to practice that song. So for me to get to watch Ozzy live is one of my dreams. I am also very excited to be able to play in front of all different kinds of metal fans, and not just black metal.

ChthoniC Appears on Your Music Magazine

Piggy Bank from Tiffany

Thank you Grandpa.

That's my girl!

HOUSE FOREIGN AFFAIRS COMMITTEE PASSES RESOLUTION, SUPPORTING VISITS BY TAIWAN’S PRESIDENT TO US ANYTIME, ANYWHERE

In a unprecedented move, and with unanimous consent, the House Foreign Affairs Committee today passed the House Concurrent Resolution 136 led by Rep. Steve Chabot, calling for the lifting of all restrictions imposed on the visits by the Taiwanese highest-level government officials to the U.S, including the President. It marked the first time the House Foreign Affairs Committee marked up and passed the resolution after similar resolutions were introduced during the past two Congresses.

It is worth noting that both the Chairman and the Ranking Member of the Committee Reps. Tom Lantos and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen co-sponsored the resolution, indicating the importance and the strong level of support the Committee placed on this resolution. The resolution has 33 co-sponsors.

The resolution concludes that: “restrictions on visits by high-level elected and appointed officials of Taiwan to the United States, including the democratically elected president of Taiwan, should be lifted. And the U.S. should allow direct high-level exchanges at the Cabinet level with the Government of Taiwan.” The resolution has 33 co-sponsors.

Today’s effort to support Taiwan in the Congress follows the House passage last week of the amendment halting all government funding used to impose restrictions on exchanges between two governments. Unlike the amendment that touches upon restrictions on various exchanges between the two government, HCR 136 focuses only and mainly on the visits by the Taiwanese President and high-level government officials to the U.S.
FAPA president C.T. Lee, MD states: “The mark up of the resolution today is major landmark in the campaign to lift all restrictions on high-level visits from Taiwan and provides great encouragement to the government and the people of Taiwan in less than a week. It will lend further credence to the prevalent belief in Congress that Taiwan is a strong U.S. democratic ally and deserves to be treated as one. The time is now that the United States treats Taiwan like the fellow and friendly democracy it is.”

Johnny Frigo

Johnny Frigo, 90; Jazz Violinist and Bassist

Unlimited ChthoniC, Unlimited Taiwan

**********
Unlimited ChthoniC, Unlimited Taiwan

Unlimited ChthoniC, Unlimited Taiwan

From all over the world Taiwan's bright lights of gifted, creative and dynamic people have emerged from the darkness to provide a sense of inspiration for all. Taiwan's sparkling lights range from sculptor Ming Chu, to the internationally-acclaimed director Ang Lee, the internationally renowned Cloud Gate dance troup, Go world champion Chun-hsun Chou, the Sahara-crossing ultra-marathon runner Kevin Lin, and Major League Baseball players Chien-ming Wang, Hong-chih Kuo, and Chin-hui Tsao. Taiwan's creative gifts and energy can not be contained within borders or forced to abide by the restrictions of political deal-making. The 23 million people of Taiwan are living diligently and sensibly, with the wish to freely thrive in this world as equal partners on our shared planet.

For far too long, China's authoritarian government has been greedily eyeing Taiwan to take possession and exploit the island nation. Members of the world community have allowed China to succeed in suppressing Taiwan's international presence in every possible way.

Today, the reality of Taiwan as a nation is being ignored by international policy makers world wide. The rights and wishes of Taiwan's people are coldly disregarded by some of the very international organizations which claim to support the rights of all people as equal members of the international community, free from the shackles of colonialism and servitude.

Beginning In 2007, ChthoniC will launch its largest and most ambitious project to date; a major tour in the United States, covering fifty concerts in sixty days. Chthonic will set out on the longest "march" in the history of Taiwanese music, unleashing the full power of music to embrace its American fans in a rocking tour-de-force of uninhibited, unrestrained and unapologetic musical energy. For this we are calling our tour "Unlimited".

In "Unlimited" - we want to emphasize the "Unlimited" potential of Taiwan and the Taiwanese people. We will also highlight "UN Limited Taiwan", an endeavor to strongly protest how the UN (United Nations) limits Taiwan's full participation as an independent country. ChthoniC has recorded "Unlimited Taiwan ", a new single specifically created to headline this campaign. Hopefully, more and more international friends will understand and support Taiwan, through the "Unlimited" power of music.

Our world tour will include dates in Europe and Asia followed by our series of shows in the U.S. --Keeping the energy of Taiwan "Unlimited".

Declare Independence

Declare Independence

Declare independence!
Don't let them do that to you!
Declare independence!
Don't let them do that to you!
(Justice)
Declare independence!
Don't let them do that to you!
Declare independence!
Don't let them do that to you!
(Justice)

Start your own currency!
Make your own stamp
Protect your language

Declare independence
Don't let them do that to you
Declare independence
Don't let them do that to you

[x4] Make your own flag!

[x6] Raise your flag! (Higher, higher!)

Declare independence!
Don't let them do that to you!
Declare independence!
Don't let them do that to you!

Damn colonists
Ignore their patronizing
Tear off their blindfolds
Open their eyes

Declare independence!
Don't let them do that to you!
Declare independence!
Don't let them do that to you!

With a flag and a trumpet
Go to the top of your highest mountain!

And raise your flag! (Higher, higher!)
[x5] Raise your flag! (Higher, higher!)

Declare independence!
Don't let them do that to you!
Declare independence!
Don't let them do that to you!

Raise the flag!
