Protest against DiFi's remarks on Taiwan

Mecury News:
Feinstein insists U.S. not bound to protect Taiwan

Campaign 2000 - Senator Dianne Feinstein

Conservatives vs. Liberals on Taiwan

Personally, these two quotes nailed it.
From time to time people drop by here and ask me if it bothers me that so many of my allies on Taiwan are political conservatives. And my considered answer is that it bothers me not one whit. What bothers me is not that conservatives are right, but that liberals and progressives are so very, very wrong when it comes to Taiwan.

from Michael Turton in his post Dianne Feinstein on Taiwan

For most Americans, supporting democratic forces in the world is a no-brainer. For those running the Democratic Party today, it's always an agonizing decision.

from Investors.com Editorial: With Leaders Like These...(subscription)

It bothers me how liberals can be liberal and OK with China at the same time. It simply puzzles me.

What in the world?

Either I've gone crazy or the world is upside down... I'm simply speechless. Isn't the CCP used to be the KMT's archenemy? And now the KMT is going to exhibit personal letter of the "late Chairman Mao Zedong"??!! And read this:
The exhibit includes a letter written by Mao in 1924, to the late Communist Lin Boqu and KMT member Peng Sumin, both of whom had participated in the KMT's First National Congress which was held that year and marked the start of cooperation between the two parties.
Thus the exhibition of such letter in 2006 is to echo with the 1924 cooperation between the two parties? I couldn't believe my eyes.
Taipei sources said the exhibition are activities sponsored by the KMT to commemorate the May 4th Movement, a patriotic campaign launched in 1919 by a group of young Chinese students and intellectuals to fight imperialism and feudalism.
What does the 1919 May 4th Movement in China have anything to to with Taiiwan in 2006?

I am really puzzled... My hubby asked if this will backfire on the KMT. My answer is, maybe, maybe not. With the blue fading into red (I can hear the glasses break in graphic artists, political analysts, historians... ), it seems that the supporters will embrace anything Chinese nowadays... and it simply makes me sick to my stomach.

Did you also just come out of the "wayward cloud" movie?

I didn't have to sit through that!!!
It was too much. It was not about the sex is it? I was watching the girl's reaction.....

Why can't these directors just make some romantic love stories?

Yeah I just flown in from Seattle. My parents got the tickets and I just came with them.

Parents? @@|||
They wanted to see it because they think it's in Chinese.

@@|||

店裡今天看起來仍然有些忙碌,不過他說這算是 slow day, he's more than happy to take lunch with his beautiful wife. 我自然趁機接著說,Good, as you should.

(2006 International Conference on Histry and Culture of Taiwan -- Representation, Interpretation and Identity),很有意思的主題。

Learning

For the past couple days I have busied myself in a grammar/writing book (Elements of Styles, William Strunk Jr. 1918) translation and learning CSS. My original idea for my business website was to install moveable type so that I could input content easier. However for some odd reason MT simply wouldn't let me login. :( After some struggle and a couple more intervening jobs I just gave up. I guess it's not a bad thing now I can learn one more skill (CSS) and I have got a teacher (thanks ah-Lu) to show me how dreamweaver work. That will be my next step.

After all of this I am thinking to myself... indeed the best way to learn is through work!!! With the basic html codes I've already learned, and .css source codes stolen (:p) from other websites, I was able to reverse-engineer how .css works. And the W3C website helped a lot. With the goal of putting up the content of EoS, in just a couple of days I managed to know the basics of CSS, came up with a comprehensive structure and layout of the EoS, and finished 5 pages!!!

My designer friend ah-Lu called it "very nice". James, on the other hand, was "surprised' that I can design such a good looking site! (Should I take that as a compliment or an insult?)

I remember a conversation I had... years ago when I was still in grad school, on a flight from New York to Chicago ... with a lawyer sitting next to me. She was practicing in Chicago but went to New York for a case. I was a graduate student, first year. She told me, you are young and you might think school work is tough and you can't bear the load. But after graduation and into the real world, you will find that you need to be more productive and handle a lot more stress than what you have now. I didn't want to believe her at the time. But damn she's right! Graduation was a long time ago, and I have done so much work since. I joked to my roommate that I could have gotten several Ph. D.'s if I had worked this hard back in school. (yeah that's an exaggeration... wasn't really cut out for a scholar/researcher job.)

Anyway this just another random blog entry to remind me how nice it is to learn new things and also to discover my "design talent". In addition, had I kept the name of the nice lady on that flight, I would love to meet her again and express my appreciation.

Secret Taiwanese Weapons Program uncovered

Finally we have our own native weapon that works!

Officials uncover secret Taiwanese weapons program
By Yu Ren-jie
STAFF REPORTER , IN KINMEN
Saturday, Apr 01, 2006,Page 3

In a move certain to send shockwaves through cross-strait relations, the Ministry of National Defense yesterday said a secret weapons development program it had begun in 1996 had succeeded beyond all expectations, and had the potential to restore equilibrium to the cross-strait military balance.

The program, dubbed Operation Bin Lang Fen Nu (檳榔憤怒), was created under former president Lee Teng-hui (李登輝), after the fallout from the Lafayette-class frigate scandal left many military strategists convinced that Taiwan had to rely on indigenous solutions for its defensive needs.

Although details are sketchy, a highly placed military source confirmed that the weapons relied on chemicals extracted from chewed betel nuts, and that a number of professional betel-nut chewers, including truck drivers, betel-nut girls and taxi drivers, had been recruited to produce adequate supplies of betel-nut extract.

Unconfirmed media reports indicate that one of the systems developed was a type of land-attack cruise missile, which employed an aerosol-dispersal device to shower enemy positions with red betel-nut juice, leaving enemy personnel feeling slightly ill, while possessing them with an uncontrollable desire to sing at a KTV.
